Summary:
Understudies never get to perform

. . . which is why being Juliet's understudy in the school's yearly "Evening with Shakespeare" is the perfect role for Emily. She can earn some much-needed extra credit while pursuing her main goal of spending time with Wes, aka Romeo, aka the hottest, nicest guy in school (in her completely unbiased opinion). And she meant to learn her lines, really, it's just:
a) Shakespeare is HARD,
b) Amanda, aka the "real" Juliet, makes her run errands instead of lines, and
c) there's no point because Amanda would never miss the chance to be the star of the show.

Then, Amanda ends up in the hospital and Emily, as the (completely unprepared!) understudy, has to star opposite the guy of her dreams. Oops?

Disclaimer: I was sent an ARC of this book and decided to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion of the novel.

There were some really cute things about this one, but there were other meh moments that I wasn't a huge fan of. I liked Emily, but her voice was kind of young for a junior in high school.

I definitely could have done with a bit more conversations between her and her friends that weren't about boys as well. But I enjoyed myself while reading this so I don't have that many complaints.

I thought that considering the summary reads that Emily will screw up at the play that it would be more of a focus than what it was. That plot point was over within the first 25% of the book and that left us with the age old "who will take me to the prom???" dilemma that most of these high school books usually fall into. Which was meh to me.

Sure there were a lot of cute and funny moments, especially when Emily forgot her lines at the play, but otherwise I was meh about the whole situation tbh. I think if you're looking for good fluff and don't care too much about plot, then this is the book for you.

  1. I totally agree with your thoughts on this one! Fun, fluffy, and utterly superficial, this is a cute book on a surface level and offers nothing else rather than a flirty romp in the pages. Emily was hilarious and had the most mortifying situations. Good thing it was so short? Haha.

  2. Aw, I'm sad to hear the play part ends so early and the prom takes over. Not a fan of prom in meatspace or books. *sigh* oh well. Thanks for the heads up!
