Summary:
Magic lives in our darkest corners.

Beneath the streets of New York City live the Avicen, an ancient race of people with feathers for hair and magic running through their veins. Age-old enchantments keep them hidden from humans. All but one. Echo is a runaway pickpocket who survives by selling stolen treasures on the black market, and the Avicen are the only family she’s ever known.

Echo is clever and daring, and at times she can be brash, but above all else she’s fiercely loyal. So when a centuries-old war crests on the borders of her home, she decides it’s time to act.

Legend has it that there is a way to end the conflict once and for all: find the firebird, a mythical entity believed to possess power the likes of which the world has never seen. It will be no easy task, though if life as a thief has taught Echo anything, it’s how to hunt down what she wants…and how to take it.

But some jobs aren’t as straightforward as they seem. And this one might just set the world on fire.

Okay so here's the thing. This wasn't, well, anything special. I wanted lots of magic and compelling characters but this was like a weird mix of Shadow and Bone, City of Bones, and Daughter of Smoke & Bone. And I mean, heavily on the last one. And y'all know I did not like DOSAB.

I don't even know how to describe what I didn't like because I didn't like all of it. Like nothing worked for me. I didn't like the characters, I didn't like the description of the "magic" characters (mostly because I have no idea how to picture them. did they have feathers and scales all over? even on their faces? just their bodies? someone draw me a picture except not really because I don't care), and I didn't care for the world. I always have an issue with Magic Right Under Our Noses™ because it never seems super plausible. Like as soon as we knew Echo could see the bird people, I knew [she was the firebird. well I knew once they said "we should find the firebird" I was like oh K (hide spoiler)].

And like I was so excite because Echo was in a relationship to start with Rowan and I was like !!! NO LOVE TRIANGLE which was the only redeeming quality until she fell for someone else. Like idk we barely got to see her be with Rowan and I just wanted more from that. She thought she was in love with him! And then NOPE! I just feel like we were cheated out of a relationship that could have been for something that I couldn't get behind. HE IS 250 YEARS OLD AND SHE IS 17. *sighs*

There isn't a lot in this one to enjoy tbh. I guess if you liked all the books I listed above and don't mind that you are *basically* reading the same book again, then go for it. But I would not recommend it.

  1. Yikes, sounds like there are a lot of issues with this book! I hate when magic or certain characters aren't described well and I have no idea how to imagine things. And the romance aspect just sounds like a mess. Thanks for the review, I'd been really wondering about this one, so I'm glad to know it's likely not worth it!

  2. This was one of my most (personally) hyped book of last year and I remember being quite disappointed in it. I'm with you on the romance--not my favourite aspect.

I liked the some of the side characters more than Echo as well. I plan on reading the sequel but it's not a big priority at the moment.
