BLOG TOUR: COLD WATER BRIDEGROOM by B. Brumley

Cold Water Bridegroom
by B. Brumley
Series: A Falling In Deep Novella
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy/Fairy Tales
Release Date: August 2, 2015

Having grown up in San Francisco, Calder Brumen is drawn to the ocean, and he's spent his life trying to capture the beauty of the Pacific on canvas. Over time, he has become obsessed with painting the image of a dark haired mermaid named Gaire, and Calder struggles to explain his devotion to these portraits to his best friend. When Calder finds sandy footprints leading to the edge of his bed, he suspects that the haunting siren is real.

Pursuing the truth, Calder is dragged into a murderous, underwater plot that could destroy them all. And he must choose – is the possibility of a lifetime with Gaire worth risking death for himself and everyone he loves?

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this one. This was a fresh take on mermaids for me and I think it was extremely well done. I liked the mythology and the idea that only certain mermaids have extra/special powers compared to others.

There was a lot of rich world building, but I think because this was a novella, there was still some details lacking. We got a lot of information about the world but it came rather quickly and there was still so much more that could have been explained and that I wanted to know. I would love to spend more time in this world because the mythology was excellent and I loved the flip-flopping from sea to land. I would love to know and learn more about how this world came to be and what the powers of the queen were. Honestly, this could be an amazing series if there was just a little bit more information and time taken to describe the world.

I actually didn't mind the semi-instalove between Gaire and Calder. I thought that it was explained enough and there was a year of interactions between the two that we never saw which added to the idea that they already loved one another. I do think that there could be more to come between the two of them that would deepen this for me but otherwise I am okay with them being together.

I would have liked a bit more of actual conflict and more action for the final showdown but otherwise I thought that there was enough tension to make it believable. I would like to know a bit more of the history (which would come through more world building) to understand the conflict just that much more.

Honestly, if you want a fresh take on mermaids, or just love mermaids in general, I would highly recommend this one. It is a quick and fast paced read and extremely enjoyable! 4/5 stars for me.

  1. Oh cool! This sounds really interesting, and I do love my mythology. Will the author be expanding into a full novel or series, or do you think that this is it?
