Flicker (Flicker #1) by Kaye Thornburgh

Flicker by Kaye Thornbrugh

Goodreads Synopsis
When sixteen-year-old Lee Capren is spirited away to Faerie, she is forced to serve capricious faeries as a prized portrait artist… and live as their prisoner.

A chance encounter with the charming Nasser grants Lee a chance for freedom—but what felt like mere days in Faerie spanned years in the human world, and Lee no longer has a home to return to.

Nasser is a Seer—a human with magical powers—and Lee is quickly plunged into his world: a sprawling city teeming with magic and mystery, where supernatural creatures walk hidden among humans. With the help of a rag-tag group of teenage Seers, Lee must master her newfound magical talent and outwit a cunning faerie determined to destroy her.

I absolutely adored this book. I was a little skeptical at first because of how it started (redheaded girl with some sort of supernatural ability finds a faery ring and stumbles into their world) but I'm glad I gave it a chance. It has a The Mortal Instruments-y vibe to it but it was still fun for me to read this novel. I am always up for a good fantasy series that looks at how our world and the magical world collide and intersect.

I liked that the year/time frame wasn't given -- it made it feel like it could be at any time. This allowed me to not think too much about the outside technology or world as I remember it (or know it) but think just about the world that the author created.

World-building is huge to me and I loved the bits and piece of fae mythology we got in this novel, but even the magic mythology in general was good. It was different and exciting and made me wish I had some sort of natural ability to draw magic from.

Lee was a good character, but I'd like to see the story shift to Filo and have much more Alice next time. I like the bits and pieces of the backstory of Filo-Jason-Nasser-Alice friendship but I need more about them and their relationship as a team unit. I would also like to see other magical worlds and elements explored by this group. Maybe demons?

I'm definitely going to pick up the second book and am really looking forward to following the story.

Overall: 3.5/5 stars. Good introduction to the series that could be expanded upon immensely.
